Questions & Empathy deck

I can’t do my work if I can not get inside the lives of the people I hope to design for, empathy not sympathy guides my insight and creation. When I arrived at Sun Rosa they were just starting to come around the importance of empathy as a vital act of creativity. I was asked to bring my process to bear to creating a repeatable client exercises that can focus collaboration around the principles of empathy. My collaborator Natalie Simms, and I started with the agency’s persona archetypes (The Sage, The Inquirer, The onvener, The confidant, The Cultivator, The Seeker, The Alchemist) and developed questions and prompts that amplify each archetypal ways of seeing the world.

These provocations were so successful they were used to create an ongoing content series, Applied Empathy. Active for over 5 years, this forum for honest unexpected conversation among creative and business leaders. This deck works as well on stage as in your living room.

“West Point’s mission is to build leaders of character. The cards proved to be a thought-provoking and vital tool for our cadets and faculty to understand themselves and each other. Ultimately, this creates very self-aware and transformational leaders.”

CAPTAIN JUSTIN BOKMEYER; ARMY WEST POINT ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

“The cards encourage you to reflect on how empathy does or does not show up in your life without self-judgement or self-critique—an approach that is actually quite refreshing.”
